SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (February 5, 2005) - The University of Connecticut baseball team launched its 2005 season with its annual preseason banquet on Friday, February 4. The event took place at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, Conn.
UConn celebrated the 40th anniversary of its 1965 College World Series appearance with a reunion of 16 members of the team. Bob Schaefer '67, who played shortstop on that CWS team, was honored with the first-ever Distinguished Alumni Award for his accomplishments while playing at Connecticut as well as his five decades of work in baseball.
ESPN senior baseball analyst Peter Gammons was the evening's keynote speaker. After his inspiring speech about his years in baseball, he took questions from the 250-plus in attendance.
