Huskies Skate to 4-4 Tie with American International

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 1) – The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie with American International on Tuesday evening at the Olympia Ice Center. With the tie, the Huskies stand at 11-21-3 overall with a 10-11-2 record in Atlantic Hockey while the Yellow Jackets hold a 4-21-4 record, 4-14-4 in the league.
Sophomore Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.) received a feed in the slot from senior captain Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and junior Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) to give UConn a 1-0 lead 4:54 into the opening period. Sophomore Brian Burns (Binghamton, N.Y.) then made it a 2-0 advantage with his tally at 11:31 in the first from classmate Nick Marean (Waukee, Iowa) and freshman John Stockler (Princeton, Minn.).
Just seven seconds into the second period, Scherer put Connecticut in front, 3-0 with his second of the game, a power play tally, from sophomore Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.). However, with an extra skater on for a delayed penalty call, Ron Miller answered for AIC off a pass from Preston Cicchine 6:08 into the frame.
Koidahl would push UConn’s lead back up to three with a goal at 16:55 in the second, with an assist going to freshman Mike Neilon (St. Paul, Minn.), but the Yellow Jackets rallied in the third, scoring three to secure the tie. Chris Bolognino scored the first of the three at 4:18 from Jeason Lecours and Ben Ellsworth. Ellsworth then notched two more helpers on AIC’s next two goals by Neil Sullivan and Jeff Valdes at 17:22 and 18:50.
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Huskies, 38-36. Sophomore Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.) stopped 34 in net for Connecticut, while goaltender Frank Novello turned aside 32 shots for American International
Connecticut returns home on Thursday, March 3, for its final home contest of the season against Quinnipiac at 7:05 p.m., when the team will pay tribute to its five seniors in the Hartford Courant Careerbuilder.com Senior Salute. The annual presentation of the "Heroes Hat" will also take place as the winner of the contest will win the season series and be awarded the 2004-05 "Heroes Hat".
