Huskies Suffer 2-0 Setback Against Northern Iowa
SAN JOSE, Calif. (March 13) -- The University of Connecticut softball team suffered a 2-0 setback to the University of Northern Iowa at the National Invitational Softball Tournament, hosted by San Jose State University on Sunday. The Huskies fall to 3-9 on the season while the Panthers move to 6-6 overall.
The only two runs of the contest came in the bottom of the first as Nikki Ferden doubled with one out then scored on an RBI double by Erin Strellner. Stephanie Aguero followed with a single to plate Northern Iowa’s second run.
Senior Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.) and sophomores Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.J.) and Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) tallied one hit apiece for UConn.
Uju Ibekwe recorded the win (3-4) for Northern Iowa as she pitched a complete-game shutout and allowed three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Senior Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) took the loss (3-3) for the Huskies as she allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Connecticut next travels to Daytona Beach, Fla., where the team will compete in the Bethune-Cookman Tournament on Friday, March 18, against Bethune-Cookman and University of Texas-El Paso at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
