Huskies Roll to 95-47 First Round Win Over Dartmouth
UConn to face Florida State in Second Round Tuesday Night at 7:00 p.m.
STORRS, Conn. (March 20, 2005) – The No. 3 seed University of Connecticut women’s basketball team rolled to its 19th straight win in the NCAA Tournament with a 95-47 win over No. 14 seed Dartmouth on Sunday night at Gampel Pavilion.
The Huskies displayed a diversified offensive attack in the convincing victory as all 12 active Huskies scored in the game – marking the first time this season that Connecticut has accomplished that feat.
UConn advances to Tuesday’s second round game where it will face No. 6 seed Florida State at 7:00 p.m. (ET) at Gampel Pavilion.
UConn improves to 24-7 overall while Ivy League champion Dartmouth closes out its season with a 17-11 mark.
Connecticut improves to 54-11 all-time in NCAA Tournament games and boasts a 29-1 mark in the NCAA Tournament dating back to 2000.
The Huskies also move to 25-2 all-time at Gampel Pavilion in NCAA Tournament play and have won each of their last 23 such games at the facility.
The Huskies never trailed in the contest which saw them run out to a 9-2 lead over the initial 5:35 before going on a 27-7 run over the next 8:06 to run their advantage to 36-10.
UConn finished the opening half with 51 points, its second-highest opening half scoring total of the season and its largest first-half scoring total in an NCAA Tournament game since posting 51 in the first 20 minutes in its first-round win over Pennsylvania in 2004.
Connecticut picked up right where it left off in the second as it shot .613 (19-of-31) from the field while out-scoring the Big Green 44-21 over the final 20 minutes.
Junior Ann Strother (Castle Rock, Colo.) and freshman Mel Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio) paced five UConn players that finished with double-figure points at 13. Jessica Moore (Palmer, Alaska) added 11 while Charde Houston (San Diego, Calif.) and Willnett Crockett (Harbor City, Calif.) each notched 10.
UConn drilled a season-best 11 three-point field goals in the win as eight different players connected from beyond the arc. Thomas led the long-range assault with a team-best three 3-pointers.
Elise Morrison paced Dartmouth in the loss with a game-high 15 points.
