Huskies Advance to Round of 16 for 12th straight season with victory over Florida State
STORRS, Conn. (March 22, 2005) – Four UConn players finished in double-figure points as the No. 3 seed University of Connecticut women’s basketball team advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen" for the 12th consecutive season following its 70-52 win over No. 6 seed Florida State on Tuesday night at Gampel Pavilion.
UConn will advance to the Kansas City Regional Semifinals where it will face No. 2 seed Stanford on Sunday, March 27 at Municipal Coliseum at 9:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
The Huskies improved to 25-7 overall on the season, while Florida State slips to 24-8.
The win extended UConn’s NCAA Tournament winning streak to 20 games – one shy of tying Tennessee’s NCAA record mark of 21 (1996-99).
Tuesday’s second-round clash stayed tight early as the team’s were tied at 14-14 at the 11:07 mark of the first half before the Huskies pulled away for good with a 28-5 run over the final 11:23 of the first half.
UConn held Florida State to just 19 first half points – its lowest scoring effort over the opening 20 minutes this season. Senior Roneeka Hodges was the only Florida State player to hit a field goal in the first half.
The Huskies held the Seminoles to a .200 (5-of-25) field goal percentage in the first half as it held a 40-19 lead at the half.
Florida State turned the ball over 19 times which resulted in 22 UConn points. The Huskies also dominated the Seminoles in the paint as they out-scored them 36-22 – which included a lopsided 22-2 margin in the first half.
Florida State managed to out-score UConn 33-30 in the second half as it improved its touch from the field to .500 (13-of-26).
The win improved UConn’s mark in NCAA Tournament games since 2000 to 30-1 and upped its record in second round games to 13-2. The Huskies boast an all-time mark of 55-11 in NCAA Tournament games following its win over Florida State.
Ann Strother (Castle Rock, Colo.) matched her career-best scoring performance in an NCAA Tournament game with 17 points. Jessica Moore (Palmer, Alaska) poured in 11 points and 12 rebounds for her third career double-double in the NCAA Tournament and her third this season.
Barbara Turner (Cleveland, Ohio) and Ashley Battle (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each posted 11 points to round out the Huskies’ double-digit scorers.
Hodges tallied a game-high 28 points to pace Florida State in the loss.
