Huskies Edged by Quinnipiac, 4-2 on Senior Night
STORRS, Conn. (March 3) – The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team fell to Quinnipiac, 4-2, on Thursday evening at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. UConn slides to 11-22-3 with the setback, 10-12-2 in Atlantic Hockey. The win moves the Bobcats to 18-12-3 overall with a league record of 15-6-2. The victory also secured the "Heroes Hat" for Quinnipiac, as it won the season series with Connecticut, 2-1.
Senior captain Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) opened the scoring just 32 seconds into the first period as he connected with a pass from junior Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) and sophomore Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.), giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Quinnipiac managed to tie the score at the 6:11 mark when Reid Cashman tallied a goal from Matt Craig. The Bobcats then moved ahead, 2-1, when John Kelly snuck a shot past sophomore goaltender Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.) 19:32 into the opening period with assists going to Joe Dumais and Craig.
Michael Bordieri gave Quinnipiac a two-goal cushion at the 13:05 mark in the second, scoring on the doorstep from Tom Watkins and Kelly.
UConn threatened a comeback in the third when senior Mark Murphy (Jamestown, R.I.) brought the Huskies back to within one with a blast from the point at 14:48. The assist on Murphy’s goal went to Olsen for his 99th career point. However, Matt Froehlich answered for the Bobcats just 29 seconds later with a scorching shot off a feed from Craig who tallied his third assist of the night.
Quinnipiac outshot Connecticut, 27-21. Tomes made 23 saves for the Huskies while Jamie Holden stopped 19 shots in net for the Bobcats.
In the Hartford Courant Careerbuilder.com Senior Salute pre-game ceremony, UConn honored its five seniors Olsen, Murphy, Beau McLaughlin (Virginia Beach, Va.), Matt Grew (Yarmouthport, Mass.) and Adam Rhein (Cottage Grove, Minn.) who played in their final home contest with the Huskies.
