UConn Defeats New Hampshire, 6-1

STORRS, Conn. (April 13, 2005) - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team defeated New Hampshire by a score of 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon. The win is UConn's third straight and fourth in the last five matches. The Huskies are now 6-11 overall this spring (3-7 vs. BIG EAST teams).
The lone Wildcat point was registered in the first match when senior Jen LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) retired the match to Megan Breen. The Huskies then breezed through the next five singles matches, winning each in two sets. Seniors Whitney Simcik (Reading, Pa.) at No. 2 and Barbara Schumsky (West Hartford, Conn.) at No. 3 cruised to 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Sophomore Christine Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) defeated Tiffany Hinenman, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. Fellow sophomores Liz Dibbs (Allentown, Pa.) and Ashley Petruzzi (Bradenton, Fla.) rounded out singles play with Dibbs winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and Petruzzi topping Amy Suprenant, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Huskies swept through doubles to take the point. Schumsky and Simcik defeated Breen and Jenna Kafferly, 9-8 (6) at No. 1 in what would be UConn's toughest match. LoRusso and Dibbs won 8-4 over Heineman and Jessica Porter at No. 2, with the No. 3 duo of Petruzzi and Burek topping Lensey Dixon and Suprenant, 8-3.
