Huskies Victorious Against Crusaders, 16-11

STORRS, Conn. (April 16, 2005) – Both Tracy Mullaney and Dana Stewart recorded hat tricks, and Mullaney also added four assists, as the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team defeated The College of the Holy Cross, 16-11, on Saturday afternoon at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs. The Huskies improve to 9-3 while the Crusaders fall to 9-6 overall. With the win, UConn clinches a winning record for the third time in school history and the first since 2002.
Shannon Burke dished the ball to Laura Trzasko at 3:49 to give the Huskies the first goal of the game. Jacque Hastings would answer back for Holy Cross as she scored on an assist from Patricia Sutton at 5:32. Less than a minute later, UConn’s Jacqui Hamilton responded scoring unassisted at 6:05. The Crusaders would take the 4-2 advantage at 9:51 with two goals from Patricia Sutton and one by Amy Archambault. Archambault would go on to score two more goals in the half, but not before the Huskies added four of their own. UConn’s scoring run was sparked by a free position goal scored by Mullaney at 10:42. Mullaney would then assist Kristin Link on the game-tying goal at 13:28. Burke also capitalized on a free position goal at 15:35 just before assisting on Mullaney’s second goal at 15:52. Archambault scored her second goal of the half, unassisted, at 18:10 followed by her third goal, which was assisted by Carolyn Smirti, at 19:36. The Huskies rallied back to take the 8-6 lead at the break with goals coming from Hamilton and Heather McHugh.
The Crusaders’ Kaitlin Nangle opened up the second half scoring with just 48 seconds off of the clock. Archambault followed up with an unassisted goal at 35:37 to tie the game 8-8. Stewart would score the next two goals for the Huskies, both off passes from Mullaney. Sutton then capitalized on a free position scoring at 40:21, cutting the Crusader deficit to 10-9, but they would get no closer. The tandem of Stewart and Mullaney would hook up again as Stewart scored her third goal at 40:58. Trzasko would end the five-minute scoring drought with an assist from Hamilton at 46:07. Sutton scored on Holy Cross’ first free position of the afternoon at 48:21. McHugh, Link, Mullaney and Burke would all score goals over the next 10 minutes for the Huskies. Sutton scored the final goal of the game on her second free position at 57:50 to set the final score at 16-11.
Jennifer Wong left the game at 22:45, making 10 saves while allowing six goals. Kristen Haldeman took over for Wong adding six saves with five goals. Megan Orr went the distance for the Crusaders stopping 23 shots.
UConn will return to action on Tuesday, April 19 when the Huskies play host to New Hampshire in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
