STORRS, Conn. (April 19, 2005) – Shannon Burke scored four goals and added an assist as the No. 18 University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team sailed past the University of New Hampshire, 14-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs. The Huskies improve to 10-3 with the win, while the Wildcats slip to 7-6. UConn ties the school record for the most wins in a single season. The 2000 Huskies posted a 10-6 overall record.
In addition to Burke’s strong play, Jacqui Hamilton and Tracy Mullaney also scored hat tricks. The match marked the 20th consecutive goal scoring effort by Mullaney, dating back to April 7, 2004. This sets her just one goal shy of Pam Lowie’s 21 game goal scoring streak set from April 17, 1999 through March 10, 2001.
Burke opened the scoring in the game with an unassisted goal at 2:11. The Wildcats’ Jess Burnap answered back at 4:47 with an unassisted goal of her own. This would be the one and only tie of the match as Burke scored on consecutive goals with the first coming at 11:21, unassisted, and the second off a delivery from Mullaney at 12:30, putting UConn up 3-1. The Huskies continued the scoring run with each of the game’s next three goals. Mullaney scored Connecticut’s first free position goal at 14:21. Teammate Heather McHugh capitalized on a hand-off from Kristin Link at 17:48. Burke then scored the Huskies’ second, and final, free position goal of the game at 19:30. New Hampshire fought back scoring two goals from Katie Leland and Moira Talbot in the final eight minutes of the half, cutting the score to 6-3. Connecticut quickly answered back as Bonnie Levin dished the ball to Hamilton for the Huskies’ seventh and final goal of the half.
Hamilton started the second half just as she ended the first scoring an unassisted goal at 35:33. Burke’s pass to Link at 41:42 resulted in a 9-3 lead for the Huskies. Dana Stewart scored on a wild shot from about 20 yards out at 42:10 as the Huskies hit double digits in goals. New Hampshire would get their first goal of the half on a drive from Jill Albee at 50:35. Connecticut would score the next four goals of the game coming from Hamilton, Mullaney (2) and Tammy Michel to go up 14-4. Stewart would get credit for the assist on Mullaney’s goal at 56:37. The Wildcats attempted to make a comeback scoring three goals at the end from Albee, Alexa Webster and Laura Dosdall in the final 2:19, but their efforts were too late. Dosdall’s unassisted goal at 59:32 set the final score at 14-7.
Jennifer Wong played a complete game in net, making 10 saves while allowing seven goals. Wong also picked up two ground balls. Ashley Milley came out of the game at 50:35 with nine saves for UNH while giving up 10 goals. Stacey Plati would finish up in the net for New Hampshire with three saves while allowing four goals.
UConn returns to action on Saturday, April 23 when it travels to No. 8 Georgetown for a contest set at 1:00 p.m. With a win, the Huskies would clinch at least a share of their first BIG EAST title in school history.
