Huskies Hold Annual Awards Banquet
STORRS, Conn. (April 30) – Head Coach Bruce Marshall presented the 2004-05 University of Connecticut hockey team season awards at the annual banquet on Saturday, April 30, at the Alumni House on the Storrs campus of the University.
Junior Aaron Kakepetum (Balmertown, Ontario) was voted by his peers to receive the team’s 7th Player Award. In 2004-05, Kakepetum appeared in 36 of 37 games and tallied three goals and three assists for six points.
Senior Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) was named the team’s MVP for the 2004-05 season after leading the team in scoring with 36 points on 12 goals and 24 assists. Olsen was honored at the conclusion of the season with a selection to the Atlantic Hockey Association first team. He also recorded his 100th career point as a Husky to become only the second player in UConn Division I history to reach this milestone.
The Thomas Jacquard Award was given to freshman Charles Solberg (Barrington, Ill.). The award is in memory of Thomas Jacquard, who was killed in an auto accident during his freshman year at UConn. The award is presented to a player who exemplifies the characteristics and qualities that Thomas embodied. In his rookie season, Solberg played in 27 games and recorded five points on three goals and two assists.
Sophomore J.R. Corkery (Salt Lake City, Utah) was given the Coach John Chapman Award. The award honors former UConn hockey Head Coach John Chapman, who passed away on January 2, 2002 at the age of 76. Coach Chapman looked for players that displayed hard work, dedication and a fierce competitive nature, and Corkery embodied those qualities in his second season at UConn. In 2004-05, Corkery scored one goal and tallied six assists for seven points.
Senior Adam Rhein (Cottage Grove, Minn.) was honored with the Silver Bowl Award for his dedication to the UConn Hockey program. Adam played in 55 straight games and missed just three contests in his four year career with the Huskies to take the all-time program record with 139 games played. In his senior season, Rhein tallied two goals and one assist for three points.
Coach Marshall also announced the 2005-06 co-captains, which will be Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.).
