STORRS, Conn. (April 6, 2005) – Shannon Burke, Jacqui Hamilton and Kristen Link each recorded hat tricks to lead the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team to a 12-8 win over Boston College on Wednesday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs. UConn improves to 7-3 and 2-1 in BIG EAST action while the Eagles dip to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in league play. With the win, UConn evens the all-time series with the schools at 4-4. It is the first time the home team has won a game in each of the past seven meetings between the sides.
Burke opened the scoring 55 seconds into a balanced first half with a free position goal. BC goals by Carley St. Lucia and Susie Breaznell gave the Eagles a 2-1 advantage at 12:13, but UConn retook the lead at 3-2 after goals by Link and Hamilton. Hamilton’s goal was set up by Tracy Mullaney, part of a three-point night for the senior. BC tied the game at 23:48 as Courtney Legath hit Elizabeth Kadison, but UConn went back up, 4-3, when Hamilton tallied, unassisted, 56 seconds before half time. BC’s St. Lucia hardly took the final minute off though. After scoring from Kadison with 12 seconds to play, she both took and controlled the ensuing draw and carried the ball all the way down the field to score with one second to play in the half, putting the Eagles up 5-4.
That lead would be BC’s last of the game as the Huskies opened the second half with a four goal flurry in the first five minutes, all of them unassisted. Hamilton, Link, Burke and Mullaney all scored in the mini-run which put UConn on top 8-5 and forced BC to call a time out to regroup. The Eagles scored the next goal at 36:58 when Breaznell converted off of a feed from Jackie Yovankin, but UConn would regain a three-goal advantage in thrilling fashion as Mullaney scored at 39:34 on an over-the-shoulder, behind-the-back shot. Hamilton set up Mullaney’s goal which would stand up as the game-winning goal, her third game-winner of the year. Tammy Michel, Burke and Link would all score in succession to put UConn up 12-6 with 7:01 to play in the game as the Huskies scored eight of the half’s first nine goals. Legath and Lizette Blohm scored in the game’s waning moments for BC to account for the 12-8 final score.
Jennifer Wong went the distance in the UConn net, making 10 saves, while Courtney Zwirko made her first career start for BC and stopped nine shots.
UConn will return to action on Sunday, April 10, when the Huskies travel to Rutgers for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
