BOSTON, Mass. (April 7) – The University of Connecticut softball team defeated Boston University, 12-5 on Thursday afternoon at the B.U. Softball Field. With the win, UConn improves to 9-16 while the Terriers fall to 7-13-1 overall.
The Huskies opened the scoring with a two-run first inning. Senior Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, N.Y.) had a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and then scored on a double by sophomore Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.H). With two outs, senior Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.) drove in UConn’s second run of the inning with a single to plate Calcagno.
B.U. cut its deficit in half with a run in the bottom half of the first. DeKenya Williams walked and came around to score on a double by Erin McDonald.
UConn extended its lead to four runs by posting a three-spot in the fourth inning. Senior Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) knocked a leadoff single and scored on a triple by classmate Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, N.C.). Senior Jen Ward (Gales Ferry, Conn.) followed and was hit by a pitch and junior Erica Pernell (Plainville, Conn.) walked to load the bases for Calcagno. Calcagno then drilled a single that brought home two more runs for the Huskies. Connecticut went on to cushion its lead with another run in the fifth on a fielder’s choice RBI by Ward.
In the bottom half of the fifth, the Terriers managed to climb back to within two on a two-run homer by Chiya Louie and an RBI single by Jenny Shields. However, that would be as close as B.U. would come as the Huskies went on to score two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to secure the victory.
Calcagno helped to lead the UConn bats as she went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored in the contest. DiBiase also faired well, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Campen was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored and deBary hit 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Senior Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) earned the victory (7-7) as she pitched four and two thirds innings and allowed one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Junior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) threw two innings of relief and allowed three runs on four hits and freshman Ashley Thody (Middletown, Conn.) pitched one third of an inning and allowed one run on two hits.
Ashlee Freeman took the loss (2-7) for the Terriers, going three and one-third innings and allowing five runs on four hits with four walks and no strikeouts. Jenna Grapensteter relieved her and threw two innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Brittany Detwiler finished the game, throwing one and two-thirds innings and allowing five runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Connecticut returns to action on Saturday, April 9, when the team will play host to BIG EAST foe Villanova in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
