Huskies Dominate Black Knight Invitational

WESTPOINT, N.Y. (January 14, 2006) – The University of Connecticut women’s track team dominated the Black Knight Invitational on Saturday afternoon, earning 228 points. University of Pennsylvania took second place in the event, recording 116 points, over one hundred less than UConn. Army finished in third with 92 points, Binghamton University in fourth with 45 points and Manhattan placed fifth with 36 points.
Sophomore Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) qualified for the NCAAs in the triple jump with the second best performance in school history of 12.69 meters. Highsmith had a successful campaign all around with a first place finish in the 60m hurdles and a second place finish in the high jump.
The freshman class proved to be veterans on the track with several top finishes. In the 400m dash, Mandela Graves-Fulgham (Shutesbury, Mass.) took first place with a time of 58.65 while Sharelle Green (New London, Conn.) finished third in the event with a time of 59.91. Jessie Foreman (Wayland, Mass.) placed first in the 60m dash with a time of 7.62, Alyssa Evering tied for second and Monique Hodges (Wethersfield, Conn.) took third. Foreman followed with another first place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 25.36, Evering took third and Graves Fulgham placed fourth.
The upperclassman worked just as hard as the rookies in the invitational. Marlene Priest (South Dennis, Mass.) placed first in the 500m run, Jennifer Rogers (Parksville, B.C.) took third in the 400m dash, and Niamh Cunningham (Branford, Conn.) placed third in the 3,000m run. In the field events, Leah Williams (Brookfield, Conn.) placed first in the pole vault, followed by Lisa Kachmarsky (Monroe, N.Y.) in third. Edwina Clark (Syndey, Australia) finished first in the long jump, Erin Donnelly (Barrington, R.I.) placed second in the weight throw and Cassie Buckwalter (New Wilmington, Pa.) followed in third.
The Huskies will be back in action again on Jan. 20 at the GoRhody Invitational held at URI.
