WORCESTER, Mass. (January 19, 2006) - Despite scoring two goals in the third period, the University of Connecticut men's ice hockey team fell to Holy Cross, 5-2, on Thursday evening. With the loss, the Huskies drop to 7-14-1 overall and 6-11-0 against Atlantic Hockey Association opponents while Holy Cross is now 13-6-1 overall and 10-4-1 in the AHA.
The Crusaders got off to a quick start, scoring three goals in the first 12 minutes of play against freshman goaltender Jon Anderson (Vadnais Heights, Minn.). After switching to sophomore Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.) between the pipes, the Huskies held Holy Cross to just one goal in the second period.
Junior Nick Marean (Waukee, Iowa) put the Huskies on the board just two minutes into the third period. It was his first goal of the season and came off of a rebound of a shot by senior Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) by way of junior Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.). Uber scored UConn's second goal at the 5:49 mark in the stanza to cut the Holy Cross lead in half off of feeds from Koidahl and Marean.
However, the Huskies could not muster any more offense and Holy Cross picked up one more goal on an empty net in the third to close out the victory at 5-2. Although the Huskies out-shot the Crusaders, 31-21, they were not able to convert on power plays. UConn had seven opportunities but did not advance on any of them.
The two teams will meet again on Tuesday, January 24 when the Huskies will host the Crusaders in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m.
