STORRS, Conn. (January 28, 2006) – Two empty net goals sealed the victory for Canisius as the University of Connecticut men’s hockey team fell, 5-2 on Alumni Day at the Freitas Ice Forum on the Storrs Campus. The Huskies out-shot the Griffs 52-26, but could only slide the puck past Canisius’ net minder Dan Giffin on two occasions, including freshman Nick Schneider’s (Maplewood, Minn.) first collegiate goal.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead in the first period with a goal at the 5:00 mark with a tally by Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.). Myhro took a feed from fellow classmate B.J. Bayers (St. Louis Park, Minn) and found the back of the net from the front of the crease.
The Griffs answered back a little over five minutes later with a goal by Fred Cocchimiglio. Goaltender Jon Anderson (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) made an impressive save on a one-on-one breakaway by Michael Cohen prior to Canisius’ second goal. Cohen was released from the penalty box as the puck was sliding by, advanced on Anderson, but was stopped as he tired to slide the puck between Anderson and the post. Andrew Dawe rebounded Cohen’s shot and put it past Anderson to take the lead at the 15:17 mark.
Schneider tied the game for the Huskies in the third period with his first career goal off an assist from Myhro. Schneider took the shot from in front of the blue line and sent it slicing through the Griff’s defense to find the back of the net for the Huskies’ second tally of the night.
Canisius scored the game-winner at the 17:08 mark of the third period with a power play goal by Cohen. The forward took a feed from Brandon Irish-Baker and scored from in front of the crease to take the lead and the game.
UConn pulled its goalie with 1:37 remaining, but could not advance on the Griff’s defense. Canisius scored two empty-goals to bring the final score to 5-2.
The Huskies are back on the ice on February 5 at Yale. The game will be broadcast on CN8. The game is slated for 2:00 p.m.
