Men's Basketball Earns No. 1 Seed In NCAA Championship

STORRS, Conn. (March 12, 2006) --- The University of Connecticut men's basketball team was one of four teams to receive No. 1 seeds in the 2006 NCAA Championship along with Duke, fellow BIG EAST member Villanova and Memphis.
Connecticut, which has a 27-3 record and was the regular season co-champion of the BIG EAST, will play in the Washington, D.C. Regional of the NCAA tournament and will open play in the event at Philadelphia's Wachovia Center on Friday, March 17, 2006.
UConn's first round opponent will be Albany, which has an overall record of 21-10 and won both the America East regular season and postseason tournament championships. Game time is 7:25 p.m. and all NCAA Championship contests are televised by CBS.
The winner of the UConn-Albany game will meet the winner of a first round game between No. 8-seed Kentucky and No. 9-seed Alabama-Birmingham. That second round game will begin after the conclusion of the UConn-Albany game.
The other tops seeds in the Washington, D.C. regional are No. 2 seed Tennessee, No. 3 North Carolina and No. 4 Illinois.
Connecticut is making its 27th appearance in the NCAA tournament and has won the national championship in 1999 and 2004. The Huskies have an all-time record of 37-24 in NCAA tournament play.
Of UConn's 26 NCAA appearances, 14 of them have come under head coach Jim Calhoun in his 20-year tenure at Connecticut.
The 2006 NCAA Championships marks the fourth time in school history that the Huskies have garnered at No. 1 seed -- joining the 1990, 1996 and 1999 squads.
