Women's Tennis Edges Georgetown, 4-3

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 18) -- Freshman Jaclyn Shapiro won her debut match at number one singles in three sets to give the University of Connecticut women's tennis team a 4-3 win over Georgetown on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Huskies improve to 2-7 this spring with the win while the Hoyas fall to 0-3.
UConn took the doubles point to open the match and then claimed the overall victory when Shapiro forced a 3-3 singles split. In doubles, UConn took the point with wins at the No. 2 (Jessica Porter and Shapiro) and No. 3 (Elizabeth Dibbs and Alison Koch) positions.
Singles play say Georgetown claim victories at the No. 2-4 positions while the bottom two came through for UConn. BreAnn Cheung was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 5 over Taylor Martin while Ashley Petruzzi took down Eileen Boyle, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6. The match came down to Shapiro and Stephanie Cohen at No. 1 but Shapiro gutted out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win that gave UConn it's first BIG EAST win of the year.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Quinnipiac at 2:00 p.m.
