STORRS, Conn. (March 21) -- Senior Christine Burek got the clinching win as the University of Connecticut women's tennis team topped Quinnipiac, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the UConn Tennis Courts. The Huskies improve to 3-7 this spring with the win while the Bobcats dip to 4-5.
Every Husky won either a singles or doubles match on Tuesday but none won in both. The Bobcats are one of the region's tougher squads coming off of two consecutive Northeast Conference titles and subsequent NCAA Tournament berths.
UConn opened play by taking the doubles point, a significant difference considering the eventual 3-3 singles split. Elizabeth Dibbs and Alison Koch teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 3 while Jaclyn Shapiro and Jessica Porter sealed the point with their 8-5 triumph at No. 2.
The Huskies won the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles contests to claim the overall victory. Burek was a 7-5, 6-2 winner on the second line, defeating Tina Hoang. BreAnn Cheung toppled Danielle Rodriguez, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 5 while Ashley Petruzzi claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Nikki Adams.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday when they travel to face Brown at 3:00 p.m. in Providence.
