BALTIMORE, Md. (April 12, 2006) - Senior Abbey VanDeusen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored a season-high four goals, including a back-to-back pair in the second half, but the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team fell to Loyola, 15-13, Wednesday afternoon at Geppi-Aikens Field. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 3-8 on the season with a 0-4 mark in the BIG EAST, while the Greyhounds improve to an even 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
The Huskies led for much of the first half of play, starting with VanDeusen’s opening score just 1:02 into the contest when she fired a shot into the back of the net off a pass from Bonnie Levin (Rose Valley, Pa.). After two goals by the Greyhounds, Janet Williams (Reisterstown, Md.) and Levin pulled UConn back on top, only for the ballgame to be tied back up at three-all.
Once Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) scored at the 14:32 mark, the Huskies would maintain the advantage until 1:25 left in the period. After leading by as much as two at 5-3 and 6-4, UConn relinquished the lead when Loyola came back with tallies from Maura Kenney and Stephanie Walker to send the teams into the intermission with a 6-6 score. The Huskies are 0-4 on the year when entering the break with an even score.
Kate McHarg and Emily Lawrence scored :21 apart for the Greyhounds to go up 8-6 less than two minutes into the second stanza, but VanDeusen single-handedly brought the Huskies back into the game with two quick goals within a minute to even the score at 8-8 with 25:34 to go.
Two more quick goals gave Loyola the lead for the fourth time of the contest, creating a gap that UConn would not be able to overcome. Kristin Link (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Robyn Pastuch (Merrick, N.Y.) each scored down the stretch to bring the game within one on two occasions, but the Greyhounds buckled down on defense to come away with the 15-13 win.
The Huskies won the battle for ground balls, holding a 19-14 advantage. Goalie Kristin Haldeman (Malvern, Pa.) finished the day with nine saves, while Loyola’s keeper Alex Piraino tallied 11.
UConn welcomes California to the East Coast Friday night at 7:00 p.m. when the teams face off in Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. In honor of Student Appreciation Night, the first 300 students in the gates wearing UConn gear or white will receive a free gift.
