STORRS, Conn. (April 22, 2006) - Laura Trzasko (Plainsboro, N.J.) tallied her second hat trick of the season, scoring three goals as the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team fell to third-ranked Georgetown, 12-8, Saturday afternoon at a rain-soaked Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. With the loss, UConn dips to 4-10 on the year with a 0-5 mark in the BIG EAST, while the five-time conference champion Hoyas improve to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) and Janet Williams (Reisterstown, Md.) also earned three points for the Huskies, with Burke notching her team-leading 34th goal of the year to go with two assists, while Williams put a pair in the back of the net and adding an assist. Goalie Kristen Haldeman (Malvern, Pa.) had her 10th double-digit save performance of the year with 15 stops on the day.
Coco Stanwick scored her first of four goals for the Hoyas just under eight minutes into play, but Kristin Link (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Williams pulled UConn on top, 2-1, for its only lead of the game at the 17:23 mark. Stanwick assisted on the game-tying goal by Paige Williams and then threw back the go-ahead score 4:17 later to go up 3-2. Trzasko and Burke teamed up to tie the ballgame with 9:10 to play in the first half, but Courtney Hubschman converted on a quick pass from teammate Stephanie Zodtner at the 0:27 mark to send Georgetown into the half with a 4-3 lead.
The Hoyas opened the second period with six unanswered goals, including two apiece from Stanwick and fellow Hoya Lucy Poole, before Burke squelched the 7-0 run by scoring on a free position shot to bring the score to 10-4, in favor of Georgetown. That started a mini-run from the Huskies with Williams scoring on a feed from Tori Joel (Bel Air, Md.) and Bonnie Levin (Rose Valley, Pa.) knocking back her fifth goal of the year to cut the lead to four at 10-6. The two teams traded tallies over the remaining 11:35 to keep the margin at four. Trzasko scored both goals during that spread for the Huskies to cap off her career-high tying performance.
Georgetown won 17-of-22 draw controls and put up a 31-22 shot advantage on the day.
The Huskies return to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 23, as they take on Colgate at 2:00 p.m. at Morrone Stadium.
