STORRS, Conn. (April 8, 2006) - Janet Williams (Reisterstown, Md.) connected on all three of her free position attempts to be one of three Huskies to net a hat trick, but it was not enough as the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team fell to Rutgers 14-12 Saturday night at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. With the loss, UConn falls to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the BIG EAST, while Rutgers improves to 6-5 and earns its first conference win to move to 1-2.
Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) and Laura Trzasko (Plainsboro, N.J.) also scored three goals on the night, while Katie Batiuk dominated the attack for the Scarlet Knights with five goals and an assist for a game-high six points.
The Huskies opened scoring for just the third time this season with a goal from Trzasko off a Burke assist 1:20 into play. The teams swapped goals over the next several minutes with the Scarlet Knights evening out the mark at two-all at the 21:12 mark. Kate Shomo broke the tie to continue a 4-0 run that would put Rutgers on top for the remainder of the game. Williams and Trzasko pulled the Huskies back within one at 5-4 before Jamie Farewell’s second goal of the half put the Scarlet Knight ahead 6-4 at the intermission.
Rutgers scored three of the first four goals of the second period to pull ahead by four at 22:28. Burke then started off a back-and-forth battle with the teams trading tallies over the next 14-plus minutes to keep the Huskies within three for much of the half. Batiuk and Kathryn Lawrence then rattled off quick goals to give Rutgers its largest lead of the game with the score 14-9.
UConn then scored three goals in a 23-second span to chisel away at the margin and bring the Huskies to within two with :51 to play; however, the team was unable to capitalize on its offensive opportunities after winning the ensuing draw control and time ran out with the score 14-12.
Though the two teams kept it close statistically, UConn held the advantage in shots (27-24), ground balls (17-16) and draw controls (15-13).
The Huskies return to action with a 3:00 p.m. game Wednesday at Loyola. The Greyhounds are currently 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST, coming off a 13-12 overtime win over No. 11 Syracuse Saturday in Baltimore.
