UConn Volleyball Picked 9th in Preseason Poll

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (August 10, 2006) – The University of Connecticut volleyball team was selected to finish ninth by the conference’s head coaches in the 2006 BIG EAST Preseason Volleyball Poll as announced by the BIG EAST Conference on Wednesday, August 9, 2006.

 The Huskies, who finished 7-7 and ninth in the BIG EAST standings last season, received 92 points in the voting, eight ahead of Rutgers and 12 behind Syracuse. Notre Dame, 2005’s Co-BIG EAST conference regular season champion and BIG EAST Tournament champion received 188 points and eight first-place votes in being picked to finish the at the top of the conference.

 Louisville was selected second with 180 points and six first-place votes. Cincinnati took 162 points for third place, while St. John’s was chosen fourth with 143 points.

Anastasia Yartseva-Stewart, an outside hitter from Louisville, was selected as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year.

 UConn will kick off the 2006 season at home with a match against Hartford on Saturday, August 26 at 2 p.m.
