Volleyball Earns Academic Honors

STORRS, Conn. (August 29, 2006) – The University of Connecticut volleyball team has been honored for their academic achievements by both the BIG EAST conference and the Athletic Director’s Office.
Six team members were named Director of Athletics Scholar-Athletes. To receive this award, a student-athlete must earn a G.P.A of at least 3.0. Kaity Craig (Terryville, Conn.), Megan Frey (Chaska, Minn.), Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.), Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) as well as graduated seniors Heather Ashley and Megan Crawley all met the requirements.
Also, six members garnered the distinction of BIG EAST Academic All-Star. Student-athletes must achieve a 3.0 G.P.A or higher for at least two consecutive semesters to be eligible. Craig, Frey, Julie Pickard (Hillsborough, N.C), Silver, Ashley and graduated Jenny Neelands were awarded this distinction.
The Huskies opened the 2006 season with a 3-0 win over Hartford on Saturday, August 26. UConn travels to Spokane, Wash. to compete in the Gonzaga Volleyball Classic with their first opponent being host Gonzaga on Friday, Sept. 1 at 10 p.m.
