WEST POINT, N.Y. (January 27, 2007) — Freshman goaltender Beau Erickson (Hinton, Iowa) tallied a career-high 44 saves, but it wasn't enough as the University of Connecticut men's hockey team was defeated, 3-0, Saturday night at Army in Atlantic Hockey action.
With the loss, the Huskies fall to 9-16-1, 9-10-1 in the league, while Army improves to 14-9-4, 12-6-4 in the conference.
The Black Knights scored the game's first goal early in the first period when Owen Meyer converted with a power-play goal. Tim Manthey started the play with a shot on net turned away by Erickson. Meyer, however, banged in the rebound while standing in the slot.
Army extended its lead to 2-0 second before the first intermission as Will Ryan scored a breakaway goal with four seconds left to play before the buzzer. After Rob Ross corralled a rebound in the defensive zone and cleared it to Zach McKelvie, Ryan controlled McKelvie's pass off the boards and skated in for the Black Knight's second goal of the game.
Following scoreless action during the second period and the majority of the third, the Huskies pulled Erickson with just over a minute remaining left to play in order to skate with a one-man advantage. Army, however, would add an empty netter to put the game out of reach.
UConn returns to the ice Feb.2 at 7:00 p.m. when the Huskies travel to Sacred Heart.
