STORRS, Conn. (November 3, 2007) - The University of Connecticut dropped its second straight game to Sacred Heart Saturday night 5-0. UConn is now 1-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the Atlantic Hockey Association. The Pioneers are 3-2-1 and 3-0-1.
The first period was played evenly until a couple of penalties were called on the Huskies. Facing a 5-on-3 penalty kill, sophomore goalie Beau Erickson (Hinton, Iowa) came up with a couple of big saves off shots taken from the top of the left circle. Despite a 13-5 shot advantage for Sacred Heart, achieved mostly due to their three power plays, the first period ended in a 0-0 tie.
The second period was played more evenly as both teams traded chances. After another penalty was called on the Huskies, Sacred Heart responded with a power play goal at the 4:07 mark, followed by another goal 26 seconds later. Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) had the best chance for UConn in the game when his power play shot at the end of the period was stopped with a good save by the goalie.
UConn came out aggressive in the third period, recording the first four shots on goal. However, a rebound goal by the Pioneers Dave Jarman and another goal within 22 seconds by Matt Gordon ended up clinching the game for Sacred Heart.
For the game Sacred Heart out shot Connecticut 31-25. Chris Ochoa (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) led the Huskies with four shots each.
UConn returns to action next weekend with a home-and-home series against AHA rival Bentley. They host the Falcons on Friday, November 9 for a 7:05 p.m. start at the Freitas Ice Forum. They then travel to Waltham, Mass. for the rematch on Saturday, November 10 also at 7:05 p.m.
