SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 2, 2007) — American International rallied for three unanswered goals en route to a 3-2 overtime victory over the University of Connecticut men's hockey team Friday evening at the Olympic Ice Center.
Jereme Tendler netted the game-winning goal just 30 seconds into overtime to lift the Yellow Jackets to just their seventh conference win of the season. Mark Pavli fired an initial shot that hit the pipe, but Tendler was in position to force home the rebound for his 14th goal of the season.
Sophomore B.J. Bayers (St. Louis Park, Minn.) gave the Huskies an early 1-0 lead as he scored his first goal of the season. After consecutive passes from Alec Kirschner (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and Jarrett Scarpaci (Billerica, Mass.) Bayers flicked a wrap-around shot passed AIC goalie Tom Fenton for the only goal of the first period.
Senior Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) extended UConn's lead to 2-0 midway through the second period when he connected for his 12th goal of the season. Koidahl pushed across a goal from right in front of the net following a number of Husky shot. Junior Charles Solberg (Barrington, Ill.) and sophomore Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) were both credited with assists on the play.
The Yellow Jackets cut the UConn lead in half with a goal just nine seconds before the second intermission as Neil Sullivan scored on a slap-shot. Bryan Jurynec eventually evened the score at two goals apiece late in the third period after a shot off the stick of Jeason Lecours was stopped and left in front of the Husky net.
UConn goaltender Beau Erickson (Hinton, Iowa) turned back 22 AIC shots and suffered just his first loss in his last five games.
UConn returns to the ice Saturday evening when the Huskies welcome AIC to the Freitas Ice Forum at 7:05 p.m.
