JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 11, 2007) — Michael Arp's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Ohio State to a 2-1 victory over the University of Connecticut baseball team Sunday afternoon at the University of North Florida's Harmon Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 going into the home half of the seventh inning, the Buckeyes collected just their third and fourth hits of the game for their only run scoring inning of the contest. Tony Kennedy led off with a single to shortstop and advanced to second base on a throwing error charged to the Husky infield. Jason Zoeller then reached on a fielder's choice, moving Kennedy to third in the process. After Zoeller stole second base, Arp doubled into right field to score both runners.
UConn (3-9) scored the game's first run in the top of the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Erik Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) delivered a one-out single into right field before freshman Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) drew a two-out walk to put runners on first and second. Sophomore Dale Brannon (St. Petersburg, Fla.) drove in the Huskies lone run with a single through the left side to plate Turgeon.
Ohio State relief pitcher Rory Meister (2-1) earned the win after allowing no runs on two hits in 1-2/3 innings of work.
Husky starting pitcher Greg Nappo (Madison, Conn.) was outstanding on the hill, limiting the Buckeyes to no runs on just three hits in six innings of mound duty.
Junior Matt Karl (0-1) (Wallingford, Conn.) took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits in two innings on the hill.
UConn senior Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass) paced the Huskies at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the afternoon.
UConn returns to action Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when the Huskies travel to Sacred Heart.
