STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (32-23, 15-5 BIG EAST) shut out Villanova (18-30, 4-16 BIG EAST), 8-0, in front of 1047 at Elliot Ballpark to clinch at least a share of the 2026 BIG EAST regular season title.Â
Win a win or St. John's loss on Saturday, the Huskies can clinch the No. 1 seed to the BIG EAST Championship next week in Mason, Ohio. The lowest seed the Huskies can finish is the No. 2 seed.Â
Chris Polemeni drove in four runs on Friday including his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot, that put the Huskies on the board in the second inning, 1-0. The Staten Island, N.Y. native bookended the scoring with a bases-clearing double in the seventh to push the lead to 8-0.Â
Fellow Staten Island product Rob Rispoli drilled a three-run home run in third inning to give UConn a 4-0 advantage. It is the second home run of the year for Rispoli.
Cayden Suchy produced his team-leading ninth quality start of the season to move his record to 5-2 on the year. The LHP allowed just four hits, zero walks and three strikeouts in six shutout innings of work and threw just 66 pitches on the evening.Â
Frank Spirito followed with 2.0 shutout innings with a pair of punch outs and Austin Trumpour closed the victory out with a scoreless ninth.
The Huskies will look for the sweep and an outright BIG EAST regular season title on Saturday, May 16 at 1:05 p.m.
