ROCHESTER, N.Y. (March 15, 2007) — Three University of Connecticut men's hockey players earned Atlantic Hockey Awards Thursday evening at the league's postseason banquet from the RIT Inn and Conference Center.
Husky senior forward Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.) earned All-Atlantic Hockey Second Team accolades after a season in which he ranked 10th in the conference with 36 points on 22 goals and 14 goals. His 22 goals lead the Huskies, ranked second in the league and 10th in the nation. In addition, his 22 goals lifted him into first place on the school's single season goals scored list in the Division I era. Scherer was also tied for fourth in the conference and 23rd in the nation with eight power-play goals. Earlier in the year, Scherer became just the 26th player in UConn hockey history to tally 100 or more points for a career. He currently ranks 22nd all-time on the school's career points list.
Sophomore defenseman Sean Erickson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was named to the All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team following a season in which he tallied 18 points on one goal and 17 assists, ranking him third on the team in helpers. At the conclusion of the regular season, Erickson was tied for 10th in the league in points by a defenseman.
Senior forward Trevor Stewart (Elk River, Minn.) was honored with the Atlantic Hockey Best Defensive Forward Award. Stewart currently ranks third on the team with 32 points on nine goals and 23 assists. His 23 helpers are tops on the team and are tied for eighth in the conference. In UConn's last outing, Stewart notched a season-high three assists in helping lead the Huskies to a 5-4 win over Mercyhurst in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament quarterfinals.
UConn returns to the ice Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. when the third-seeded Huskies face No. 2 seed Army in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament semifinals from the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y.
