NEW HAVEN, Conn. (March 28, 2007) – Freshman Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) tallied a career-high five RBIs and 11 different players recorded at least one hit as the University of Connecticut baseball team cruised past in-state foe Yale, 18-6, Wednesday afternoon from Yale Field.
Fatse finished the afternoon 2-for-4 and was one of seven Huskies to collect at least two hits. Junior Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) paced UConn by going 4-for-6 on the afternoon with one RBI and two runs scored.
UConn (10-10) took an early 1-0 lead as the Huskies scored a run in the top of the first inning when senior Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) delivered a two-out single into left field to extend his hitting streak to eight games. During the streak, Donovan is batting at a .543 clip and has collected 10 RBIs.
The Huskies added three more runs in the top of the second inning to extend their lead to 4-0 by scoring each of the runs with two outs. Senior Josh Farkes (Boston, Mass.) started the rally with a single up the middle before taking second on a wild pitch. After junior Gordon Stevens (Vista, Calif.) walked, Fatse laced a triple into left field to score both runners. Fatse would next touch home on Yale's second wild pitch of the inning.
Yale (6-13) struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to cut the UConn lead in half. The Bulldogs received RBI singles from Justin Ankney and Marc Sawyer to account for the runs.
UConn erupted for 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Farkes produced the first two runs of the frame when he homered to left field for his team-leading fourth round-tripper of the year. Fellow senior Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) chipped in with a two-run single for his team-leading 17th RBI of the season. Later in the inning after the Huskies loaded the bases on walks and hit batsmen, Fatse cleared the bases with a three-run double to right field.
Sophomore Matt Burnett (Endicott, N.Y.) gave the Huskies a 16-2 advantage with an RBI single up the middle. After Yale struck for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, UConn tallied two more runs in the top of the ninth. Freshman Harold Brantley Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.) hit his first career home run as he led off the frame with a shot over the center field wall. Farkes notched his fourth RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly into center field to plate junior Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.)
Husky freshman righty Robert Van Woert (Johnson City, N.Y.) earned his third win of the season after allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out four in six innings of work.
Yale starting pitcher Chris Wietlispach (0-3) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on four hits in just two innings of mound duty.
UConn returns to action Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when the Huskies welcome South Florida to J.O. Christian Field for a three-game series.
