HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (April 10, 2007) - The University of Connecticut softball team was defeated by Hofstra 10-4 on Tuesday afternoon in Hempstead, N.Y.
The Huskies are now 15-14 on the season with a 4-5 record in the BIG EAST. The Pride sport a 23-12 record.
Sophomore Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) was the first UConn batter to step to the plate and wasted no time blasting a home run out of the park for an early 1-0 advantage.
The Huskies struck again in the top of the third. With sophomore Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) on second, sophomore Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw, allowing Ortega to score and go up 2-0.
Hofstra struck back in the bottom of the third and scored four runs, including a three-run home run from Ashley Lane to take a 4-2 advantage.
UConn kept its composure and responded with a run in the fourth. Freshman Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) doubled to right center to begin the inning and then advanced to third on a groundout by sophomore Meghan Tierney (Salem, Conn.). Truax came up big once again with an RBI single to drive home Roy.
The tacked on two more runs in the fourth to remain ahead with a 6-3 lead. The Pride scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-3 lead.
The Huskies never backed down as Ortega singled to the pitcher to begin the seventh inning. Freshman Lauren Cecchi (Simsbury, Conn.) came up with an RBI single to right field that Ortega scored off but it wasn't enough as Hofstra took the game 10-4.
Freshman Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) took the loss in the pitcher's circle over 5.0 innings of work with five strikeouts.
UConn returns Storrs for a matchup with Central Connecticut State tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. at the UConn Softball Field.
