STORRS, Conn. (April 11, 2007) - The University of Connecticut softball team dropped a 10-4 game to Central Connecticut on Wednesday afternoon at the UConn Softball Field.
The Huskies stand at 15-15 on the season while Central Connecticut moves to 9-20.
The Blue Devils began the contest with two runs in the first inning for an early 2-0 lead. CCSU then tacked on three more runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-run home run by Alison Rossi for the 5-0 advantage.
UConn got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) got things started with a single. Sophomore Meghan Tierney (Salem, Conn.) came in to pinch run for Del Ponte. With the bases loaded, sophomore Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) reached first on an error by the second baseman which drove in Tierney with the score 6-1.
CCSU added three more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 9-1. But junior Allie Gendron (Amherst, Mass.) knocked a home run out of the park which got the UConn offense going. Freshman Lauren Cecchi (Simsbury, Conn.) followed Gendron with a double to left field. Freshman Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) hit her first career home run to drive in Cecchi and make the score 9-4.
The Blue Devils would add another run in the top of the seventh and took the game 10-4.
Freshman Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) was charged with the loss pitching 3.0 innings.
The Huskies are in the midst of a seven-game homestand and will take on No. 14 DePaul on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader with the first game slated for 12 p.m.
