STORRS, Conn. (April 14, 2007) - The University of Connecticut softball team battled No. 19/16 DePaul in a doubleheader, but came up short on Saturday afternoon at the UConn Softball Field. The Huskies fell in game one 5-1, before dropping the second game 6-2.
UConn stands at 15-17 on the season with a 4-7 record in the BIG EAST. The Blue Demons improve to 27-7 and sport a 10-0 conference record.
The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.J.) blasted a walk-off home run. DePaul responded with two runs in the second taking a 2-1 advantage.
The Blue Demons tacked on another run in the third for a 3-1 lead. The offense quieted down on both sides until the top of the sixth. Linda Secka doubled to left field driving in a run and then eventually scored herself for a 5-1 advantage.
UConn came up with three straight singles in the bottom of the sixth and with the bases loaded, the Huskies couldn't convert. DePaul went on to win by a 5-1 margin.
Senior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) took the loss pitching a complete game allowing nine hits. Tracie Adix was credited with the win for the Blue Demons with seven strikouts and allowing seven hits.
In the second game of the day, DePaul wasted no time getting on the board. Sandy Vojik homered to left field. Becca Heteniak added a double and then scored on a passed ball to go up 2-0.
The Blue Demons scored two more runs, one in the third and another in the fifth for a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore Sarah Neuschwadner (Chugiak, Alaska) reached first before sophomore Erin Burtner (Jefferson, Md.) came in as a pinch runner in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) then stepped to the plate and blasted a bomb to left field to close in on DePaul at 4-2.
DePaul scored the final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh and the Huskies couldn't respond as the Blue Devils went on to win 6-2.
Freshman Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) picked up the loss in the circle for UConn pitching a complete 7.0 innings allowing six hits. Becca Heteniak was the winning pitcher for DePaul with four strikeouts and three hits.
UConn hosts BIG EAST opponent Notre Dame tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader set to begin at 10 a.m.
