Softball Falls To Boston College in Extra Innings, 3-1

CHESNUT HILL, Mass. (April 24, 2007) - Renee Ramos hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel Boston College to a 3-1 victory over the University of Connecticut softball team on Tuesday afternoon in Chesnut Hill, Mass.
The Huskies are now 20-18 on the season.
The game remained scoreless through the end of the third inning. In the top of the fourth, sophomore Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) was the first batter and was walked. Junior Allie Gendron (Amherst, Mass.) was next up for the Huskies and singled to left center to send Ortega to second. Freshman Lauren Cecchi (Simsbury, Conn.) followed suit on the following at-bat with a single to left center of her own to load the bases. Senior Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) popped up a sacrifice fly to drive home Ortega for the 1-0 lead.
The Eagles responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie things up at 1-1.
The game remained at 1-1 for the remainder of regulation play forcing the game into extra innings.
Sophomore Meghan Tierney (Salem, Conn.) was placed on second to begin the eighth inning. Senior Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.J.) singled and advanced to second on the throw while Tierney rounded third and was called out at home.
With one runner on third in the bottom of the eighth, the Eagles won the game on a two-run home run by Ramos.
Sophomore Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) took the loss in the pitcher's circle with 3.2 innings of work after coming in to relieve freshman Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.).
UConn remains on the road traveling to UMass for a single game with the Minutewomen tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m.
