Baseball Falls At Rhode Island, 4-0

KINGSTON, R.I. (April 25, 2007) — Dan Tucker’s seventh inning bases loaded two-run single broke open a scoreless tie as the University of Connecticut baseball team was defeated, 4-0, at Rhode Island Wednesday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
Rhode Island left fielder Gregg Allen reached base in the bottom of the seventh inning as he recorded a one-out single to right field to start the rally. First baseman Ryan Cunningham next singled through the left side before pinch hitter Zach Zaneski was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tucker then provided the game-winning heroics as he singled down the right field line to plate both Allen and Cunningham. Zaneski, who advanced to third on Tucker’s single, scored on the following play as second baseman Oliver Palmer delivered a sacrifice fly to right field.
Allen helped the Rams tack on a fourth run in the bottom of the eighth inning as he laced a two-out double to left-center field to score center fielder Dave Savard.
Rhode Island starting pitcher Dan Rossignol (1-0) registered the win after pitching seven scoreless innings while allowing four hits and striking out five.
UConn reliever Ted Garry (Rochester, Minn.) took the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits in an inning of work. Husky freshman starting pitcher Robert Van Woert (Johnson City, N.Y.) was credited with a no decision despite a dominating effort on the hill. Van Woert hurled six scoreless innings and allowed just two hits while striking out five. In fact, Van Woert allowed a two-out single to Tucker in the bottom of the second inning, but went on to retire the next 13 hitters before giving way to Garry.
Husky senior first baseman Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) led the way at the plate for UConn as he turned in a 2-for4-showing.
UConn returns to the diamond Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. as the Huskies welcome Georgetown to J.O. Christian Field to begin a three-game BIG EAST series.
