COVENTRY, Conn. (April 6, 2007) -- The University of Connecticut rowing team swept all five races from Villanova on Friday morning at Coventry Lake.
In the Varsity Eight, UConn led from the start and finished in 7:08.07. Villanova came in close behind at 7:10.12. The UConn junior varsity eight split into tow fours and race one Villanova boat. The UConn A team of Katie Beasley (Centerville, Mass), Julie Konstantino (Orange, Conn.), Nicole Rapp (Mansfield, Conn.), Kelli Garges (Queche, Vt.) and Deborah Chesser (Albany, N.Y.) won in 8:04. 79. Villanova was second while the UConn boat of Lauren Chan (Princeton Junction, N.J.), Megan Kielty (West Newton, Mass.), Kylie Calzone (Redding, Conn.), Lindsay Mackay (Lisbon, Conn.) and Stephanie Bryant (Natick, Mass.) was third in 8:36.8.
UConn's lightweight four of Heather Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.), Ally Zoppa (East Hartford, Conn.), Heather Gates (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), Michelle Stathers (Tollan,d Conn.) and Kathryn Dobbins (Southington, Conn.) defeated Villanova 8:12.13 to 8:46.46.
The final race of the day was the Novice Eight as the UConn A boat won with Leah Masopust (Morris, Conn.), Kelly Murphy (Marietta, Ga.), Theresa Nolan (Atlantic City, N.J.), Kathryn Rauscher (Manchester, Conn.), Stephanie Lamothe (Wallingford, Conn.), Kathryn Reynolds (South Hero, Vt.), Elizabeth Dargie (Waterford, Conn.), Rebecca Likar (East Lyme, Conn.) and Kristen Beasley (Centerville, Mass.). Villanova was second in 7:28.5 followed by a combination UConn boat of second novice/third varsity -- Claire Berube (Longmeadow, Mass.), Hayley Percy (Woodbridge, Conn.), Kerri Mocko (Stafford Springs, Conn.), Liz Harsley (Riverdale, N.J.), Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), Sade Owoye (Danbury, Conn.), Alicia Cairns (Waterford, Conn.), Caitlin Flood (Shelton, Conn.) and Brynne Davies (Middlebury, Conn.), who came in at 8:07.1.
The conditions were almost unrowable, with 15 mile per hour winds that caused the lake to white cap.
"I was happy that we were able to get everyone a race today," says UConn coach Jennifer Sanford Wendry. "The conditions were frustrating because we've had good water all week, but our rowers proved their toughness by fighting through the wind and cold temperatures."
UConn next competes at the Knecht Cup regatta in Camden, N.J. on April 14 and 15.
