Women's Volleyball Wins Home Opener 3-0 Over Manhattan

STORRS, Conn. (August 25, 2007) - Freshman Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) recorded her first collegiate double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs as the University of Connecticut women's volleyball team defeated the Manhattan College Jaspers 3-0 (30-14, 30-19, 30-15) in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.
UConn had a slow start in the first game of the afternoon as Manhattan took an early lead off two Husky attacking errors. But the Jaspers committed two service errors in a row to put UConn right back into the game.
The score remained close throughout the first game as both teams traded the lead back and forth before a kill by Murray, that put the Huskies on top 17-11. UConn never looked back as sophomore Bridget Denson-Dorman (Golden Valley, Minn.) led her team with seven assists and two kills in the 30-14 game one win.
In the second game, the Huskies picked up where they left off a night before, dominating play offensively. Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) led the way in the second set, hitting .714 while recording five kills in seven attempts. The Huskies took the game 30-19.
UConn controlled the pace of the third game, helped by a 10-0 run that put the Huskies up 19-7. A 7-0 run ended the match, as sophomore Devon Farrell (Moraga, Calif.) finished off the Jaspers with her fourth kill of the afternoon.
Denson-Dorman finished the afternoon with 22 assists and three kills while Murray picked up a match-high 10 kills. Seabaugh added nine kills for the Huskies while sophomore Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) had a match-high 12 digs.
Manhattan was led by Diane Strutner who recorded eight kills and 10 digs. Jaspers' setter, Alyssa Getzel dished out 23 assists while teammate Ashley Watson added 10 digs, respectively.
The Huskies will travel to Davidson, N.C. for the Davidson Invitational, set for Friday, Aug. 31-Saturday, Sept. 1. UConn will open the tournament with a match against High Point on Friday night at 5:00 p.m. The Huskies will then take on James Madison on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. followed by a 7:30 p.m. match-up against host, Davidson College.
