STORRS, Conn. (December 31, 2008) -After two days of hard fought hockey, one champion was crowned and six hockey players were named to the All-Tournament team. Quinnipiac University came out on top winning the Toyota UConn Classic in their first appearance and for their efforts, three of the members of the hockey team made the All-Tournament team.
The Bobcats who took down Merrimack in a thrilling overtime victory on December 29 jumped out to a two-goal lead and never looked back defeating No. 11 Air Force 4-2 for the victory. Eric Lampe (three goals), Bryan Leitch (five assists) and Dan Clarke (29 saves, two goals allowed) were named to the All-Tournament team.
The runners-up, Air Force, made their way into the championship round after a shootout win over the host team UConn. After 65 minutes of scoreless play in their first round game, the Falcons made two out of their three penalty shots to put themselves into the championship match. They made the game interesting, but in the end were unable to pull out the victory. Air Force defender Greg Flynn was the lone Falcon on the All-Tournament team.
Merrimack finished the tournament in third place. The Warriors fell in their first round game to Quinnipiac despite an early 2-0 lead. Merrimack jumped out to the same 2-0 lead against UConn but this time they were able to hold onto their lead for the third place finish. The lone Warrior to make the All-Tournament squad was Fraser Allan who produced a four point (two goal, two assist) effort over the two-game span
UConn rounded out the pack finishing in fourth place in the tournament. UConn had one member of their team make the All-Tournament team. After a two-goal effort in the game against Merrimack, Justin Hernandez earned himself a spot on the team.
For the first time since 1994, the second year of the tournament, one member of every team in the tournament earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
