STORRS, Conn. (April 15, 2008) - The University of Connecticut softball team gained a 5-1 victory over in-state rival Quinnipiac Tuesday in non-conference action. The Huskies improve to 19-16 overall with the win, while the Bobcats fall to 16-28.
The game was taped by Cox Sports Television, and will air on Thursday, April 17 at 8:00 p.m.
After Quinnipiac scored in the top of the first, UConn responded with one run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Sarah Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) singled home Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) to give the Huskies their first run of the game.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the third when Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) was able to score on a wild pitch by Bobcats pitcher Jaimie Iaquinto. Later in the inning, UConn made it 3-1 when Julie Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) singled home Allie Gendron (Belchertown, Mass.).
Connecticut closed out the scoring in the bottom of the fourth when Neuschwander hit a two-run home run, her sixth of the year. That ties her with Del Ponte for the team lead.
Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) was solid on the mound, pitching all seven innings. She gave up only three hits and one unearned run, while striking out five.
UConn returns to action on Wednesday when they host Brown. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Connecticut Softball Field.
