Softball Hits the Road for Key BIG EAST Weekend

VILLANOVA, Pa. (April 18, 2008) - The University of Connecticut softball team heads out on the road this weekend for two important BIG EAST doubleheaders. On Saturday, they travel to Villanova to face the Wildcats, with game one starting at 12:00 p.m. They will then move on to Rutgers for a Sunday doubleheader, with game one also starting at 12:00 p.m.
The Huskies (20-16 overall, 7-3 BIG EAST) currently are in a tie for third in the BIG EAST standings with Notre Dame and DePaul. They are coming off a successful middle of the week, where they defeated Quinnipiac 5-1 on Tuesday and Brown 7-3 on Wednesday. Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) was 6-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBI during the two games.
Villanova is 15-21-1 overall and 4-8 in the BIG EAST. In their last outing on Thursday, they were swept by Princeton in non-conference action. The Wildcats are led by junior Meghan Morese. She is hitting .375, with five home runs and 24 RBI. Their top pitcher is junior Laura Determan. She has a 7-6 record with a 1.78 ERA in 14 appearances on the year.
Rutgers is 18-24 on the season and 3-9 in the BIG EAST. They defeated Monmouth on Wednesday 8-3, after earning a split with Notre Dame on Monday. The Scarlet Knights top hitter is senior Mallory Miller. She has a .306 batting average with 18 RBI. Their top pitcher is sophomore Nicole Lindley. She has a 7-4 record with a 3.72 ERA in 26 appearances (11 starts).
Connecticut hosts in-state rival Central Connecticut on Tuesday, April 22 at 3:30 p.m. They then will host UMass on Wednesday, April 23, a team that is receiving votes in the latest NFCA Top 25 poll. They have another important BIG EAST weekend the following weekend when they travel to 20th-ranked DePaul for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26, before facing Notre Dame in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 27.
