Huskies Defeat Fairfield 3-0 in Volleyball's Home Opener

STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 17, 2008) – The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team prevailed to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-19) victory over Fairfield at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on Thursday evening. The Huskies improve to 7-3 on the year while the Stags fall to 2-9.
Annie Luhrsen (Wheaton, Ill.) dished out a game-high 36 assists and finished the night with six kills, two digs and one service ace. Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) and Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) both recorded double-digit kill efforts, leading the team with 12 and 10, respectively.
Murray’s .733 hitting percentage was a season-high to lead the team. Kirk leads the Huskies this season with 91 kills.
UConn held Fairfield to a -.241 hitting percentage in the first set en route to a decisive 25-8 win. The Huskies maintained a tight defense throughout the three-set victory at Gampel Pavilion, limiting the Stags to an overall .000 hitting percentage.
Six UConn players registered at least two kills in the second set, helping the Huskies to a 25-13 win. Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) and Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) stepped up their defensive play leading the Huskies in digs in the final two sets. Issac led the team with five digs in the second set and finished the night with a team-best 14. Seabaugh had four in the first set and five in the final, recording 11 against the Stags.
Fairfield stepped up its offensive efforts in its 25-19 loss in the final set of the match. UConn finished the night with a .301 hitting percentage in its first home victory of the season.
Volleyball hosts the UConn Toyota Classic on Friday and Saturday at Gampel Pavilion, starting with the first match between Temple and Maine at 5:00 p.m. The Huskies see their first action of the tournament against Cornell at 7:30 p.m.
Game Notes:
· This is the fourth time this season that UConn has defeated an opponent 3-0 and the second-consecutive match it has done so after defeating Florida A&M, 3-0 on Sept. 13.
· The Huskies totaled a season-high 54 digs in three matches against Fairfield tonight. It is their second overall dig-effort of the season, matching totals against Cleveland State (Aug. 29) and Wright State (Sept. 5). UConn’s season-high was set against Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sept. 12 (64 digs/five sets).
