UConn Takes One in 3-1 Volleyball Loss to Louisville

STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 26, 2008) – The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team battled to a 25-14 victory in the third-set of its 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 14-25, 31-26) loss to defending BIG EAST regular season co-champions Louisville on Friday night at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
The Cardinals struck first in the third set, but the Huskies rebounded with a seven point run to claim a 7-1 lead. UConn (9-5, 0-1) continued to hit well and finished the set with .367 hitting-percentage. Devon Farrell (Lafayette, Calif./Campolindo) led the Husky offense in the third set with five kills, but it was Lauren Lamerti’s (Cary, Ill./Cary) sixth kill of the night that solidified the 25-14 win. This is the first time this season that a Cardinal opponent has held Louisville to fewer than 16 points in a single set.
In the fourth set, following a Louisville (5-6, 1-0) timeout a kill by Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) tied the set 22-22. The Huskies claimed its first lead of the set with a service ace by Lamberti (23-22). UConn continued to fight before falling 31-29 after rallying back with a nine point run to tie it (24-24). Louisville’s Jana Matiasovska made the final kill her match-high 15th of the night.
Two Huskies recorded double-digit kill efforts with Murray and Lamberti leading the team with 12 and 10, respectively. Murray hit for a match best .474 hitting-percentage, adding two blocks against the Cardinals. Annie Luhrsen (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) dished 39 assists for her fifth consecutive match with double-digit assists.
The BIG EAST schedule continues for UConn with a 2 p.m. match against Cincinnati at Gampel Pavilion on Sunday.
