STORRS, Conn. - An early first half goal by rookie Linda Ruutu (Espoo, Finland) was all that the University of Connecticut women's soccer team would need en route to their 1-0 victory over BIG EAST foe Villanova in front of 1,412 people at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The victory was the first for the Huskies over the Wildcats since the 2004 season.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 8-3-0 on the season, 3-1-0 in BIG EAST play. The Huskies handed Villanova just their second loss of the season as the Wildcats drop to 8-2-2 on the year, 1-2-1 in the BIG EAST.
Ruutu scored the lone goal of the game for the Huskies just into the 14th minute of play. Sophomore Melissa Busque (St. Bruno, Quebec) started things off for the Huskies dishing the ball out to Ruutu. Ruutu sent a pass to junior Erin Clark (Somers, Conn.) who flicked it right back to Ruutu where the rookie found some space and sent a laser shot to the top of the net from about 15 yards out.
This is the fourth time, in five chances that Busque has connected with Ruutu on a goal during the 2009 season. It is also the second straight game that Clark and Ruutu have connected.
With the goal, Ruutu becomes the team's leading scorer in 2009 tallying her fifth goal of the season.
Sophomore Jessica Dulski (Pittsford, N.Y.) made five outstanding saves on the game to record her fourth shutout of the season.
The Huskies are back in action on Sunday, October 4 when they take on Georgetown for the first time in the regular season since 2006.
