Huskies Fall At RIT 6-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Behind a hattrick by Alan Mazur, RIT earned a 6-2 victory over the University of Connecticut men's hockey team on Friday night at Ritter Arena in front of a crowd of 1839. Corey Jendras (Abingdon, Md.) and Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.) each recorded a goal on the night for the Huskies.
RIT used almost every one of their power play opportunities on the night going 4 for 7 with the man advantage as UConn was 1 for 5 up a skater. The Tigers also outshot the Huskies 39-21 as Jeff Larson (Ballwin, Mo.) made a career high 33 saves on the night.
UConn opens their season 0-5-0 and 0-2-0 in Atlantic Hockey play for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The Tigers earn their first win of the year improving to 1-5-0, 1-2-0 AHA.
The Huskies got out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first as Jendras recorded his first goal of the season at 7:39. Jendras was aided by Jim Gallagher (Marquette, Mich.) who has tallied two assists on the year.
Before the end of the first though, RIT gained a one-goal lead of their own as Alan Mazur recorded back-to-back power play goals at 9:15 and 13:14 in the first giving the Tigers the 2-1 lead as time wound down in the opening period of play.
RIT tacked on another goal in the second period to boost their lead to two as Chris Tanev scored this time for the Tigers. Junior assistant captain Olson earned his first goal of the season with 4:33 left in the second period. The goal was the Huskies third power play goal of the year and was aided by his classmate and another Husky assistant captain Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) and freshman Alex Gerke (Tomah, Wisc.) who both earned their second assist of the season on the goal.
UConn was able to enter the third period just a goal down behind the reigning co-champions of the Atlantic Hockey Association before the Tigers started to rack up the goals recording three-straight unanswered goals in the third, finishing with a 6-2 victory.
The Huskies are back in action tomorrow night at RIT when they will finish out the weekend series against the Tigers at 7:05 p.m. in Ritter Arena.
