WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 12, 2009) -- Redshirt-junior Matt Burnett (Endicott, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games as the University of Connecticut baseball team downed Toledo 10-2 on Thursday afternoon at Chain Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla.
Burnett, who had a four-game hitting streak in 2008 before a season-ending injury, has continued to stay hot at the plate as he has recorded at least one hit in all 10 games this season for the Huskies.
The 6-4 redshirt-junior led the Huskies, now 5-5 on the year, to an impressive 10-2 victory over non-conference opponent Toledo as he knocked in two runs on a base hit in the fourth inning, sparking a five-run inning for the Huskies.
Sophomore Mike Nemeth (Washington, N.J.) also performed well for the Huskies, finishing the afternoon with two hits, including his first career homerun.
Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, adding his fifth double of the season.
Toledo (4-7) held a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third before the Huskies tied the ballgame at two then followed with a five-run fourth inning. Nemeth opened the inning with a lead-off homerun before Harold Brantley, Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.), Burnett, Elliot Glynn (Long Beach, Calif.) and Olt each recorded a hit.
UConn added two more runs in the sixth and one in the eighth to clinch the victory. Freshman George Springer (New Britain, Conn.) pinch hit in the eighth and recorded his first career triple as he also recorded his sixth RBI of the season.
Senior Matt McDonald (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) threw seven innings to earn his first win of the season as he allowed one earned run and five hits, while striking out four.
Dusty Odenbach (Rochester, N.Y.) and Dennis Accomando (Monroe, Conn.) each pitched one inning allowing no runs or hits, while combining for three strikeouts on six batters faced.
Toledo was led by Jared Hoying with one hit and one RBI, while Justin Collop took the loss after throwing six innings and allowing seven earned runs, 10 hits and two walks.
The Huskies will face Eastern Kentucky on Friday evening at 4:00 p.m. at the Chain of Lakes Stadium for their fifth game of the RussMatt Invitational.
