STORRS, Conn. - Junior Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) was 4-for-4 with two RBIs as the University of Connecticut baseball team cruised to a 9-3 victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
The Huskies improve to 8-10 overall with the win as Holy Cross falls to 5-14 on the year.
UConn used a four-run third inning and a three-run eighth to clinch the non-conference victory as Fatse led the Huskies in today's match-up knocking in Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) from second base to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
After Holy Cross put three runs on the board in the third to take the lead, UConn answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-3. The Huskies' runs came off four hits and one Holy Cross throwing error as freshman John Andreoli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) earned his third RBI of the season in just his fourth start of the year.
The Crusaders threatened in the top of the seventh, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs after a UConn fielding error and a double by Holy Cross' John Sills. It was just the second double of the season given up by freshman Matt Barnes (Bethel, Conn.), who then retired the next three batters on a fly out and two strikeouts.
Barnes earned the save in today's game as UConn starter, Doug Jennings (Pompton Plains, N.J.) earned his second win of the season to improve his record to 2-1. Jennings allowed six hits and walked three in five innings of work before Barnes came in to finish the game.
Barnes threw four innings and allowed two hits while striking out six batters for his first save of his career.
Andreoli finished the afternoon with a 3-for-4 performance, adding two RBIs and one run scored, while Olt had two hits and two runs to lead the Huskies' to their eighth victory of the season.
The Huskies will travel to New Haven, Conn. on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Yale Bulldogs in a non-conference match-up. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m., while live stats will be available through UConnHuskies.com.
