CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 6, 2009) - In their second game of the South Florida Tournament, the University of Connecticut softball team fell to Loyola-Chicago after allowing a three-run seventh to the Ramblers. The Huskies allowed the Loyola lead runner on in the top of the seventh and two batters hit by pitches led to a bases loaded situation.
Loyola-Chicago got on the board first in the top of the second scoring two runs due in part to some stolen bases. But UConn bounced back gaining the lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Sophomore Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) got on for the fifth-straight time in two games with a single to left. She advanced to second on a fielders choice by senior Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) and moved up one more base on a single to third by senior Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.). Both Towers and Ortega scored when senior Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) singled to right field to tie the game up at two. The Huskies went ahead on a wild pitch by Amy Solava.
But in the top of the fifth, Loyola-Chicago got another run on the board to tie everything up. The game remained tied until the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, UConn tried to rally back when Ortega homered to left field cutting into the Rambler lead. With two outs, Del Ponte came up to bat and sent a deep shot to center field that was flagged down by the Loyola Centerfielder Ellen Kresl to end the game.
The Huskies, who came away from day one of the South Florida Tournament with a win and a loss are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, March 7 against Evansville at 1:00 p.m.
