Men's Track Finishes 13th At The IC4A Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. - The University of Connecticut men's track and field squad wrapped up competition at the 2009 IC4A Championship, Sunday, with a 13th place finish garnering 24 points. The University of Albany was the top finisher ending competition with 68 points. Rounding out the top three were Liberty University (56 points) and Rutgers University (55 points).
Senior Sean Smith (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was the top Husky finisher on the weekend with his third place performance in the decathlon. Smith finished the two-day competition with 6,818 points. Also competing in the decathlon were freshmen Jake and Ben Waruch (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) who finished in seventh and eighth place respectively. Jake Waruch recorded a season best 6,577 points during the competition.
Also placing in the top five were sophomores Kyle Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Zach Meverden (Wexford, Pa.) who both finished fifth in the pole vault with a height of 4.80m (15-9).
Junior Anthony Burris (Bridgeport, Conn.) and sophomore Kyle Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.) were the only track athletes on day two to qualify for the finals in their event. The duo both qualified for the 400m hurdles finals as Burris won his heat and Edmonds qualified with his NCAA qualifying time. In the finals, Burris finished fourth with a time of 51.29 while Edmonds took fifth improving on his NCAA qualifying time, and recording a career best, finishing in 51.78.
Junior Ed Strosnick did well in the javelin throw tossing the first 200+ foot throw of the season with his ninth place finish [61.00m (200-1)] while sophomore Scott Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) finished with a season best in the 3000m steeplechase improving upon his previous best by over five seconds, just shy of an NCAA qualifying time.
Some of the Huskies are back in action in two weeks during the weekend of May 29 at the NCAA Regional Championship.
