Field Hockey Announces 2009 Incoming Class

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut field hockey team will add nine new student-athletes to the program this fall according to the 2009 incoming class, which was announced today by head coach Nancy Stevens.
Among the incoming student-athletes are seven freshmen and two transfers, which include players from three different states as well as three international players.
"We have a unique incoming class that features athletes from many different areas," Stevens said. "The nine outstanding players coming in will bring a good blend of talent, youth and experience. It is also an exciting class for us in that it is balanced in terms of attack, defense and goalkeeping."

Alicia Angelini - Fr. - Midfield/Back - Boiling Springs, Pa. (Boiling Springs HS) - Was a four-year letterwinner and team captain during senior year at Boiling Springs High School...named as 2008 Mid-Penn Athlete of the Year...2008 Carlise, (Pa.) Sentinel Big 11 First Team...2008 Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot News Big 11 Second Team...named 2008 Boiling Springs HS Team MVP in 2008...a two-time Mid-Penn Field Hockey All-Star (2007, 2008)...2007 Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot News Big 11 Honorable Mention...2006 Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot News Big 11 All-Underclassman Team...also lettered in track and field in three seasons at Boiling Springs HS...U.S. Field Hockey Futures Elite competitor in 2007 and 2008...four-year member of the Academic Honor Roll as a prep...graduated high school in December 2008 and enrolled at UConn beginning in January 2009...started at the midfield position in four spring tournaments for the Huskies...sister Jestine, a transfer from Old Dominion, is also a member of the 2009 incoming class.
Jestine Angelini - So. - Midfield - Boiling Springs, Pa. (Boiling Springs HS) - Spent her freshman season in 2008 at Old Dominion University...made four starts and appeared in 15 games overall in her one year with the Lady Monarchs...honored with selection to the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie Team...was a four-year letterwinner and team captain during senior year at Boiling Springs High School...three-time Mid-Penn All-Star First Team choice (2005-07)...2006 and 2007 Carlise (Pa.) Sentinel Big 11 First Team...2007 Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot News Big 11 First Team...tallied 10 goals and six assists during senior prep season...2006 Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot News Big 11 Second Team...registered eight goals and 14 assists during junior prep season...2005 Carlise (Pa.) Vicky Arthur - Fr. - Back - Kensington, Md. (Connelly School of the Holy Child) - Was a four-year letterwinner and team captain as a junior and senior during prep career at Connolly School of the Holy Child...posted a team-best 11 goals during senior prep season...2008 All-Maryland First Team...2008 Washington Post All-Montgomery County First Team...2008 Maryland State Senior All-Star...two-time All-League First Team choice (2007, 2008)...also lettered in track for three seasons during prep career...competed at Penn Relays in 2007 and 2008...U.S. Field Hockey Futures participant (2007-09).
Annabel Hockey-Smith - Fr. - Midfield - Caldicot, South Wales (Clifton College) - Was a team captain during prep career at Clifton College...led Clifton College to a second-place finish in the 2008 National School Finals...also guided Clifton College to national School Finals in 2005 and 2006...played for England at the U18 level and led squad to a gold medal with wins over Ireland, Wales and Scotland...represented England at the U16 level at the Junior European Championships...also competes for the Bristol Firebrands Ladies 1st XI in National League Hockey...was an accomplished cross country athlete during her prep career.
Sydney Kolysher - Fr. - Goalkeeper - White Rock, B.C. (Southridge School) - Was a three-year letterwinner at Southridge School...played on the Senior Team as a prep during each of final three seasons...led Southridge School to a perfect 10-0 record while allowing only two goals during senior prep campaign...was named Team MVP as a sophomore and junior...guided Southridge School to the 2008 Fraser Valley Regional Championship...first team goalkeeper for Vancouver Meralomas Premier Division Team in the Vancouver Women's Field Hockey League...won gold medal at 2008 U19 Disney Field Hockey Showcase...member of 2008 U19 pool champions at 2008 U.S. Field Hockey Festival...co-captain of Team British Columbia which won a silver medal at the 2008 Canadian National Championships...four-time Regional Rep Team and Provincial Rep Team goalkeeper.
Erin Koonz - Fr. - Forward - High Falls, N.Y. (Rondout Valley HS) - Was a four-year letterwinner at Rondout Valley High School while leading the Ganders to a 58-20 record...posted 65 goals during prep career...named League MVP in 2008...named All-League First Team in 2007 and 2008...helped guide the Ganders to three Section IX Championships (2005, 2007, 2008), one Regional Championship (2008) and a state runner-up finish with a 15-5 record during senior season...also lettered in softball and basketball during prep career...member of National Honor Society...served as class president during each of her four years of high school.
Amanda Madajewski - Fr. - Back/Midfield - Nanticoke, Pa. (Greater Nanticoke Area HS) - Was a four-year letterwinner and team captain as a junior and senior during prep career at Greater Nanticoke Area High School...led Trojans in scoring during freshman and senior seasons...helped guide Greater Nanticoke Area HS to Divisional Championships in 2006 and 2007...was an All-State selection during final three seasons...also lettered in soccer for four years during prep career...a member of the National Honor Society...selected for "Who's Who Among American High School Students"...named to National Honor Roll.
Ashley Morgan - Fr. - Midfield - Putnam Valley, N.Y. (Putnam Valley HS) - Was a four-year letterwinner and team captain as a senior during prep career at Putnam Valley High School...scored 11 goals and added 14 assists while leading Tigers to 19-3 record and League and Section Championships during senior season...three-time All-State selection (2008, 2007, 2006)...three-time All-Sectional choice (2008, 2007, 2006)...four-time All-League Team member...helped guide Putnam Valley HS to a combined record of 66-7-6 during prep career along with three league titles (2005, 2006, 2008), two sectional championships (2005, 2008) and one regional (2005) and one state title (2005)...named All-League as a freshman while helping Tigers win 2005 New York State Championship...also lettered in soccer, basketball and lacrosse during prep career...member of the National Honor Society.
Loren Sherer - Sr. - Forward - Essex, England (Durham University) - Transfers to UConn for final collegiate season following an accomplished initial three seasons of competition at Durham University in England...will enter graduate studies at UConn...named Team MVP at Durham University in 2008...selected for Great Britain Super League in each of last three collegiate seasons...a member of England's U21 National Team...led Durham University to BUSA and National League North Championships in 2006...led Felsted School in Essex, England, to three consecutive regional championships (2004-06) during prep career...led team in goals for three straight seasons (2004-06)...guided Felsted School to three straight top-three finishes at the National Schools Championships (2004-06)...served as team captain during final prep campaign...previously named to the England U18 National Team.
