New England Basketball Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

Kingston, R.I. - The New England Basketball Hall of Fame will induct its newest class of honorees on October 9 at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. and the group of inductees includes 14 individuals who made contributions to the basketball programs at the University of Connecticut.
UConn's 14 inductees include eight former men's basketball players: Jim Abromaitis, Dr. Doug Melody, Art Quimby, Bob Staak, Chris Smith, John Thomas, Joe Whelton and Vin Yokabaskas. Three former UConn women's basketball standouts are among the class: Wendy Davis, Peggy Walsh (Myers) and Rita Williams. Two former UConn men's basketball coaches and a former Athletic Director round out the Husky representatives: Lew Perkins, Fred Shabel and George Wigton.
Each of the inductees is entered into the NEBHOF in categories: Thomas and Yokabaskas are Division I Men's Inductees; Shabel in the Division I Men's Coach category; Walsh Myers in the Division I Women's Player category. Abromaitis, Davis, Whelton, Williams, Quimby and Staak are in the Ronald S. Perry category, named after the Holy Cross legend and honoring individuals who qualify over several categories; Melody and Wigton in the Scholar-Athlete category; Smith and Perkins in the High School player category.
